# Creative brief library

> Where completed creative briefs are filed, with links to the finished assets each one produced. Search it to see what a piece of creative was asked to do, and why it looks the way it does.

This is where completed [creative briefs](/creative-brief) are filed, per the [creative brief process](/creative-brief-process), with links to the finished assets each one produced.

A brief is filed when it's approved and handed to the producer, not after the work comes back. Filing it at hand-off means there is one brief rather than an emailed copy that diverges, and the producer and the reviewer are looking at the same document.

<Info>
  The brief and the assets are two different things and live in two places. The brief is the thinking and is filed here. The finished files live in the [creative drive](/creative-drive) or the [video drive](/video-drive), and the two link to each other.

## The library

Briefs are named per the [file naming conventions](/file-naming-conventions), with `CRE` as the prefix:

## What gets filed here

* **Every creative brief**, whether or not the work shipped.
* **Abandoned briefs**, with a note on why. The concept and the objections work in them usually outlive the campaign that prompted them.
* **Re-brief versions**, when a concept is restarted rather than revised. File the new brief alongside the original with the next version number.

Briefs are versioned rather than overwritten. A brief edited in place loses the record of what the work was originally asked to do, which is the question a retrospective actually needs answered.

## Why this is worth keeping

Six months later, someone asks why an asset looks the way it does. Without the brief, the answer is whatever the person who remembers says it is, and the reasoning gets reinvented every time a similar job comes up.

The library also stops the same concept being briefed twice. Before writing a new brief, search here for the campaign or the customer profile: an existing brief with its assets attached is faster to adapt than a new one is to write.
