# Supporting article register

> Every article outside the hero set: the how-tos, comparisons, definitions, and news pieces that build the clusters around hero articles. Reviewed less often, retired freely, but still owned and still tracked.

Everything we publish that is not a [hero article](/hero-article-register). Supporting articles answer real questions inside a cluster, link to the hero article at the centre of it, and are held to a lighter maintenance commitment.

<Info>
  Default review cadence is every 6 to 12 months, or every 1 to 3 months for anything carrying pricing, specs, or fast-moving data. Rows are worked through the [article maintenance process](/article-maintenance-process).
</Info>

## The register

Add a row when the article is published, or earlier if it helps to see what is in flight.

*The first two rows are examples using Doughnut Labs, a company that sells Doughnut Technology. Delete them and fill in your own.*

## Rules for this register

* **Every supporting article names its hero.** An article that belongs to no cluster is worth a second look: it is either the start of a new area or a piece that does not fit the library.
* **Retiring is normal here.** Unlike the hero set, supporting articles are expected to be consolidated or retired as the subject moves on. Record the decision rather than deleting the row.
* **Retired rows stay.** They are the record of what used to exist and where it now redirects.
* **Promotion frees nothing automatically.** Moving an article into the hero set requires a free slot or a demotion, decided in the annual hero review.

<Warning>
  Consolidating or retiring an article changes or removes a URL. Redirect to the closest equivalent page rather than the homepage, or every inbound link and citation pointing at it is lost, including the ones you never knew about.
</Warning>
